Oseltamivir, marketed under the brand name Tamiflu, is an antiviral medication used in the treatment and prevention of influenza (flu) caused by influenza A and B viruses. It belongs to the class of neuraminidase inhibitors, which work by blocking the action of the neuraminidase enzyme on the surface of the influenza virus, preventing its replication and spread within the body.
Oseltamivir is used to treat uncomplicated influenza in individuals aged 2 weeks and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 48 hours.
It can also be used for the prevention of influenza in individuals aged 1 year and older who have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with influenza.
Oseltamivir inhibits the activity of the neuraminidase enzyme, which is essential for the release of newly formed influenza virus particles from infected cells. By inhibiting neuraminidase, oseltamivir prevents the spread of the virus to uninfected cells, thereby reducing the severity and duration of influenza symptoms.
