Fluconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat a variety of fungal infections. It belongs to the class of drugs known as triazole antifungals.
Fluconazole works by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, which is necessary for the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption leads to increased cellular permeability and ultimately, the death of the fungal cell.
Fluconazole is available in oral tablets, oral suspension, and intravenous (IV) formulations.
